Barrie Potter

My photographic journey started 50 years ago when I first acquired a single reflex camera. I soon drifted into socio-documentary work as a volunteer with Manchester University Community Action group, photographing campaigns by local community groups, as an observer for the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL) now Liberty. I then went to work as Research Worker for the Moss Side Family Advice Centre and used photography to document its work, producing several tape/slide shows and books. I also helped to document the work of other projects based in Moss Side.

After that I worked for several years on aid and development projects in the Middle East and East Africa. My camera was always there although not as a part of my work; but I was asked to photograph the wedding of a colleague in Ethiopia.

Returning to the UK saw me settling down in Rhewl, Llangollen and quickly got roped into taking part in local activities with my camera. At this point I started earning from my photography through weddings, portraits, and commissions from NEWDance, Denbighshire Education Department as well as voluntary work with the Eisteddfod and Operatic Society. I also ran adult education classes for Coleg Cambria/
